Old Maid

No of Players

Three or more

Cards to be dealt

All the cards with the exception of one queen

Stake

As agreed - loser pays

Object

To pair all the cards held - the player who is left with the odd queen is the loser and the "Old Maid"

Deal

Cut for dealer. Dealer changes each round in clockwise rotation. It does not matter if some players hold one more card than the others.

Play

Each player looks at his or her hand and if any pairs are held (i.e. two cards of the same denomination), they are placed face down on the table.

Once this has been completed, the player to the left of the dealer commences play by fanning out the remainder of his or her cards so that they are concealed and allows the player on the left to select one of these cards. If it matches one of the cards held, the two cards are then added to the pairs already placed on the table. If it doesn't match up, then it is added to his or her hand and the cards are fanned out and offered to the next player. This play is then repeated until all the cards have been paired with the exception of the odd queen.
